What is Picture in Picture?
Picture in Picture, also known as “PiP” is an innovative new way to watch anime in the iOS Crunchyroll app. With PiP, you can tap a button and start a “mini Player” and move it around the screen, allowing you to multitask with ease.
Tell me more. What else can PiP do?
Once you have started a PiP player, you open up an entirely new way to watch anime on your device. Here are some of the things you can do with a PiP player:
- Drag the player around to any screen quadrant (small and medium PiP players only)
- Increase or decrease the player size
- Move it off the screen (and continue to hear the audio), then pull it back when you’re ready by pulling on the “handlebar”
What’s required to get PiP?
To use PiP you need iOS version 13 or above for iPad and iOS 14 and above for iPhone. Additionally you’ll need Crunchyroll app version 4.25.1 and above.
What size is the mini-Player?
PiP supports three sizes: small, medium, and large. The large version will span the width of the app screen.
What about the placement of the PiP player?
You can place the small version of the PiP player in any quadrant of the screen. With the large PiP player, you can push it to the top or the bottom of the app screen.
What functionality does the PiP player have?
PiP supports ten-second skip forward or back, pause, and close. Just tap the PiP player to reveal the controls.
How do I start PiP?
While in the video player, merely tap the PiP icon at the top of the screen. It’s a double box (the clear box has an arrow pointing down) and is to the left of the AirPlay icon.
How do I stop PiP?
Two ways: the first way is to tap the close button (“X”) in the upper left corner of the screen. That will close the player completely and keep you in your current position on your device. The second way is to tap the PiP icon on the right side of the screen, and that will return you to the Watch page.
Can I background the Crunchyroll app and use other apps or text while PiP is active?
Absolutely! You’ll be a multi-tasking master in no time. Not only that but you can browse the Crunchyroll app and look for more content to watch, add it to your watch list, or even start an entirely new episode while in PiP mode. As you can see, PiP is a powerful new way to watch anime.
Does PiP support auto-play?
As long as you have it activated in the video player, yes, it will automatically play the next episode.
Is PiP available for all users?
Any paid tier user has access to PiP. That means PiP is a totally ad-free experience.
Does PiP support subtitles?
Yes, it does. You may experience a slight delay when the player retrieves the stream.
Can I scan forward, trick scrub, or triple tap?
You can advance or go back in ten-second increments but PiP does not support trick scrub or triple tap at this time.
Will I still get my usual device notifications when I’m in PiP?
Yes. PiP does not impact any of your notification functionality.
What happens if someone calls or FaceTimes me when I’m in PiP?
Your PiP experience will pause. You can simply restart when you’re on a call by tapping the player. If you do nothing (leaving the player in pause) the episode or movie will unpause and continue after you finish your call.
How do I increase or decrease the size of the PiP player?
Two ways: you can double-tap the PiP window, or pinch gestures to zoom in or zoom out.
Can I use PiP in landscape mode?
Not at the moment, but you can start PiP while you're in full screen landscape mode. The app will automatically rotate to Portrait mode.
Will PiP work with synced content?
The app supports PiP in offline mode only when subtitles are disabled. When you enable subtitles, PiP is not available.
