What is Shareplay?

SharePlay brings you and your friends together in real time, creating a seamless connection as you watch your favorite shows simultaneously using FaceTime.

In this article, we will answer the most common questions regarding this feature:

 

What are the shared controls when watching together with SharePlay?

SharePlay offers a range of shared controls that ensure everyone on the call is in sync. These controls include:

  • Play 
  • Pause
  • Next Episode
  • Jumping (forward or backward by 10 seconds)
  • Scrolling (trick scrubbing

Any user tapping on these controls on their own device will trigger the same effect on the devices of all other participants.

 

Can I invite people who are not on an iOS device?

Unfortunately, SharePlay is currently only available on iOS. It is compatible with both iPhones and iPads running iOS 15.1 or later. To use SharePlay, make sure you have the Crunchyroll app version 4.16.0 or higher installed on your device.

 

What are the system requirements to use SharePlay?

To use SharePlay, ensure that you have the latest version of the Crunchyroll app (version 4.16.0 or higher) installed. You can check your app version by going to the Account tab and scrolling to the bottom. Additionally, make sure you are using a device that supports iOS 15.1 or later.

 

To check your iOS version, go to Apple Settings → General → About. The Software Version will be displayed as the second item. If needed, you can update your iOS version by going to Apple Settings → General → Software Update. Please note that older Apple devices may not support iOS 15.1. You can find out if your device supports iOS 15 by checking Apple's official website.

 

Do all participants on the FaceTime call need the Crunchyroll app and need to be premium to view the video?

Yes, all participants in the SharePlay session must have the Crunchyroll app installed. SharePlay is available as a premium feature only, so fans who are watching the ad-supported version of the app won't be able to join a SharePlay session.

 

What happens if one of my friends is not a premium member?

If any participant on the call is not a premium member, they will be prompted to start a free trial of Crunchyroll to join the SharePlay session.

 

Is SharePlay available internationally?

Yes, SharePlay is available internationally. However, please keep in mind that content availability may vary based on regional rules and restrictions. If you live in a territory that does not have rights to certain content and your friend adds you to a SharePlay session, you may not be able to view that specific content.

 

How do I create a SharePlay session?

Creating a SharePlay session is simple. Ensure that everyone in the call has a compatible device, the required versions of the Crunchyroll app, and iOS 15.1 or later. Open your Crunchyroll app, start a FaceTime call, and invite your friends. Then, go to the watch page of the show you want to share and scroll down to the bottom. You'll find a button labeled "SharePlay." Tap on it, and a dialog box will appear, allowing you to begin the SharePlay session.

 

How do I stop a SharePlay session?

To end a SharePlay session, go to the bottom of the watch page and tap the SharePlay button again. You'll be prompted to confirm if you want to end the session.

 

Is there a limit to the number of friends who can join a SharePlay session?

Currently, the limit for the number of friends who can join a SharePlay session is 33. This limit is the same as the maximum number of people allowed on a single FaceTime call.

 

Will SharePlay work with any of my synced or downloaded content?

At the moment, SharePlay is only available for streaming content, and it does not support synced or downloaded content
