What is Crunchyroll Games?
Crunchyroll Games is Crunchyroll's own game publishing label, and our goal is to help bring amazing anime-based mobile games to not only our users, but to all anime and videogame fans to enjoy.
Why are we doing Crunchyroll Games?
We know videogames are a natural part of the anime ecosystem and fit well within our existing offerings, such as video, manga, and merchandise, so we want to provide a 360 degree anime experience for both our users and anime fans in general.
What type of games will we be doing?
Our desire today is to focus on anime-based or anime-inspired titles on mobile devices. With that said, we are keeping our eye out on a variety of options and opportunities, across many genres and platforms.
Where will the games be available?
This will heavily depend on each game, but we will focus on Crunchyroll’s own key markets first.
Are Sumitomo our official partners?
We are partnering with Sumitomo to jointly handle distribution, localisation, and promotions, in order to launch our inaugural game, Memoria Freese, based on the hit anime, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”.
Are GREE our official partners?
GREE is the developer of our inaugural game, Memoria Freese, based on the hit anime, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”. GREE is a successful Japanese game studio, having launched a number of mobile games domestically in Japan and in international markets.
Why did we choose Memoria Freese as our first game?
The opportunity came to us via GREE. We knew the anime, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”, was a hit with our audience on Crunchyroll, and Memoria Freese has a great story that makes for a compelling RPG experience. Given the quality of the anime and the Japanese game, it was easy for Crunchyroll and Sumitomo to jointly decide to work with GREE to bring Memoria Freese to Western audiences.
What is the full name of the game?
The game is called, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: MEMORIA FREESE”, or more simply, “Memoria Freese”. You may also see the terms “DanMachi” or “DanMemo” referenced. DanMachi is an abbreviated term in Japanese for the anime, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”, and DanMemo is an abbreviated term for the game, DanMachi: MEMORIA FREESE.
When can you play Memoria Freese?
The current full release is scheduled for Spring 2018.
Will we do other games?
Our goal is to build Crunchyroll Games into a sustainable and strong publishing label. With that said, our core focus right now is Memoria Freese. Through our partnership with Sumitomo and GREE, we’re doing everything we can to ensure Memoria Freese is a game that anime, RPG, and mobile game fans will enjoy.
How many games will we do?
We do not have a firm number in mind today. Memoria Freese is our core focus at the moment. We’re working hard to bring the best game we can to Western audiences. After Memoria Freese, we will provide announcements when we have more information.
What IPs will we base our games on?
We don't have a rigid requirement today, but we will share more about future games if and when the situation arises.
Will we work with other game studios?
We are open to collaborating with any studio that has shown a track record for building great anime games that focus on player experience. To find more FAQ’s and knowledge base questions and answers, access the rest of our knowledge base.
