What is SharePlay?
With iOS 15.1, you now have the ability to start an anime viewing party using FaceTime. Enjoy a real-time connection with others on the call. With synced playback and shared controls, you see and hear the same moments at the same time.
What are the shared controls when watching together with SharePlay?
Any user tapping on these controls on their own device will trigger the same effect on the device of the other participants:
- Play
- Pause
- Next Episode
- Jumping (up 10 seconds and back 10 seconds)
- Scrolling (trick scrubbing)
Can I invite people who are not on an iOS device?
No. This feature is only available on iOS and is compatible with both iPhones and iPads running iOS 15.1 or greater. You'll also need to make sure your Crunchyroll app version is 4.16.0 or greater.
What are the system requirements to use SharePlay?
You'll need to make sure your Crunchyroll app version is 4.16.0 or greater. To confirm which version of the app you're using, go to the Account tab, scroll to the bottom to view your version number. Additionally, you need to make sure you are on a device that supports iOS 15.1 or greater. To confirm which iOS version you are on, go to Apple Settings → General → About. The Software Version will be shown as the second item. To update your version, just go to Apple Settings → General → Software Update. Please note that older Apple devices do not support iOS 15.1. Just go here to find out if your device supports iOS 15.
Do all participants on the FaceTime call need the Crunchyroll app and need to be premium to view the video?
All participants in the SharePlay session must have the Crunchyroll app installed. This feature is available as a premium feature only. Fans who are watching the ad-supported version of the app are not able to join a SharePlay session.
What happens if one of my friends is not a premium member?
Anyone on the call who is not a premium will be prompted to start a free trial to Crunchyroll.
Is SharePlay available internationally?
Yes, but please note that our content follows regional rules and restrictions. If you live in a territory that does not have rights to certain content and your friend adds you to the SharePlay session, you will not be able to view the content.
How do I create a SharePlay session?
Starting a session is easy. If you're sure that everyone has a compatible device and versions of the app and iOS 15.1 or greater, simply open your Crunchyroll app. Next, begin a FaceTime call and invite your friends. Go to the watch page of the show you'd like to share and scroll down to the bottom. There you will find a button that says SharePlay. Press it and it will provide you with a dialog box to begin the SharePlay session.
How do I stop a SharePlay session?
Go to the bottom of the watch page and press the SharePlay button again. You'll be prompted if you'd like to end the session.
Is there a limit to the number of friends who can join a SharePlay session?
Currently the limit is 33 (this is the same limit as the number of the maximum people allowed on a single FaceTime call).
Will SharePlay work with any of my synced or downloaded content?
Not at the moment. This feature is only available for streaming content.
