Buffering and connectivity issues

Nothing ruins an anime marathon faster than buffering, stuttering, or episodes refusing to load. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Follow these steps to power up your connection and keep your viewing smooth.

General fixes for all devices 

Try these first before diving into device-specific steps:

  1. Check your router: Make sure it has stable power and internet lights. If not, unplug it, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Router placement: Keep it in a central location, away from walls, metal objects, or other electronics that can block the signal.
  3. Update everything: Make sure your Crunchyroll app and device software (OS) are up to date.
  4. Reduce network congestion: Disconnect devices not in use, or limit the number of devices using your network.

Use the instructions below to change the DNS server on the device you’re troubleshooting.

Windows
  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet
    • If you’re on Wi-Fi: select Wi-Fi and click your connected network.
    • If you’re on Ethernet: select Ethernet and click your connected network.
  2. Scroll down to DNS server assignment and click Edit
  3. In the drop-down, choose Manual.
  4. Toggle IPv4 to On.
  5. Enter DNS addresses
    • For Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS: 1.0.0.1
    • For Google DNS:
      • Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4
  6. Click Save, then reconnect to the network if needed.
Mac
  1. Click the Apple menu > System Settings.
  2. Select Wi-Fi in the left sidebar.
  3. Click the Details button ( ⓘ ) next to your connected Wi-Fi network.
  4. Open the DNS tab.
  5. Click the + button and enter your DNS server addresses:
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate: 1.0.0.1
    • Google DNS
      • Preferred: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate: 8.8.4.4
  6. Click OK, then Apply to save
Android

Note: Steps may vary by device manufacturer.

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet.
  2. Select More connection settings > Private DNS.
  3. Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
  4. Enter one of the following hostnames:
    • For Cloudflare DNS: one.one.one.one
    • For Google Public DNS: dns.google
  5. Tap Save.
iOS

Note: These steps apply only for Wi-Fi connections. If you want to change the DNS settings using Cellular Network, you will need to download a DNS Changer app from the App Store.

  1. Venture into the Settings app and go to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap on the icon next to your connected Wi-Fi network.
  3. Scroll down, tap DNS, and enter your chosen DNS server:
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
  4. Save your changes.
Apple TV

Note: These steps affect Wi-Fi connections.If you want to change the DNS settings using Cellular Network, you will need to download a DNS Changer app from the App Store.

  1. Open the Settings on your Apple TV and select Network.
  2. Select Wi-Fi and choose your network.
  3. Scroll down to find Configure DNS and change it to Manual.
  4. Change it to Manual
  5. Enter your chosen DNS Address. Note that you can only adjust the primary DNS.
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
  6. Press Done to save.
Android TV

  1. Head to the Settings on your Smart TV (usually a cogwheel icon).

  2. Go to Network & Internet, write down the IP address, then press IP settings.

  3. Switch to Static and enter your IP address.

  4. Type in the Gateway (router IP) address. Follow these steps to locate the address
    On an Android Mobile device:
    Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your Network > Advanced > Gateway

    On an iOS Mobile device:
    Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your Network > Gateway’s IP address will appear next to Router

  5. Confirm the network prefix is 24, if not, go ahead and change it to 24.

  6. Enter your primary and secondary DNS addresses.

    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
Amazon Fire TV/ Firestick
  1. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network and write down the information.
  2. Go to Settings, then Network. Select your Wi-Fi Network, click the (☰) button on your remote and select Forget this Network.
  3. Select your Wi-Fi Network again, write the password, and click Advanced.
  4. Enter the IP address and Gateway from earlier.
  5. For Subnet Mask, enter 24 (if 255.255.255.0) or 32 (if 225.225.225.225).
  6. Enter your primary and secondary DNS.
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
Nintendo Switch
  1. Navigate to Settings, select Internet, then Internet Settings.
  2. Select your network from Registered Networks.
  3. Go to Change Settings, then scroll down and select DNS Settings.
  4. Choose Manual, go to Primary DNS, then hold down the B button to delete the DNS (it defaults to zero)
  5. Enter your primary DNS, then select OK
    • Cloudflare DNS Primary: 1.1.1.1
    • Google Public DNS Primary: 208.67.220.220
  6. Select Secondary DNS, then hold down the B button to delete the existing DNS
  7. Enter your secondary DNS, then select OK
    • Cloudflare DNS Secondary: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Secondary Server: 8.8.4.4

With these settings, your Switch is ready for epic online battles!

PlayStation 4
  1. Navigate to Settings, select Network.
  2. Go to Set Up Internet Connection.
    • Choose the appropriate network connection.
    • Select Custom
    • IP Address Settings: Automatic
    • DHCP Host Name: Do Not Specify
    • DNS Settings: Manual
    • Primary & Secondary DNS:
      • Cloudflare DNS:
        • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
        • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
      • Google Public DNS Servers:
        •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
        • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
    • MTU Settings: Automatic
    • Proxy Server: Do Not Use
  3. Save, turn off, and disconnect your PS4 for 30 seconds before restarting it.
PlayStation 5 
  1. Summon your PS5 home screen.
  2. Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Hold the ‘option’ button on your controller.
  4. Select Advanced Settings and go to DNS.
  5. Input Primary and Secondary DNS
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
  6. Press Done.
Xbox One
  1. Go to the Dashboard.
  2. Press Options > Network > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings.
  3. Choose Manual and enter the DNS server of your choice.
    • Cloudflare DNS:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      •  Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
  4. Save and Restart your Xbox One.
Xbox Series S/X
  1. Open Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings.
  2. Access DNS Settings.
  3. Switch from Automatic to Manual.
  4. Overwrite DNS address to one of your choice:
    • Cloudflare DNS Servers:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
      • Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    • Google Public DNS Servers:
      • Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
      • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
  5. Save and restart

After setting up your DNS, restart your device to lock in the changes. With these tweaks, your watching should feel faster, smoother, and ready for endless anime adventures!
